A leading Middle East broadcasting channel called us about the failure of their G-Technology G-Speed eS PRO XL 16TB storage array — 16 drives in RAID5, holding 10TB of critical HD video production data. Two drives had failed. Here is how we recovered every byte.

A leading broadcasting channel in the Middle East called us to report the failure of one of their external storage arrays from G-Technology (Hitachi GST), used in their live production environment. The model was a G-Speed eS PRO XL 16TB, with 16×1TB drives in RAID5 configuration, attached to a Mac running OS X via a specialised SAS interface card. The volume (Mac HFS+) had a formatted capacity of approximately 13.9TB with 10TB of very critical data.

The unit combined RAID5 reliability with high-speed data transfer (~600MB/second) needed for HD video post-production. Neither the manufacturer nor the end user could predict the failure. Two drives reported hardware failures — drive #1 and drive #7. Normally, a RAID5 volume can withstand only a single drive failure. With two drives down, the volume was completely inaccessible.

At MORE Datarecovery, we follow a systematic approach for all RAID jobs. Our lab began working on drives #1 and #7 in the clean room while imaging of the remaining 14 drives proceeded in parallel. We knew that if even one of the failed drives could be recovered, we could rebuild the volume without data loss.

Thanks to our experienced engineers and Class 100 clean room facilities, we were able to image drive #1 by the end of day 3. However, imaging of the remaining drives took more than four days due to intermittent bad blocks causing repeated read retries. By day 5, we had 15 images ready for rebuilding.

Our RAID recovery engineers identified the RAID5 parameters — stripe size, parity distribution — within minutes. We gained access to the full 13.9TB RAID5 volume. A quick HFS+ catalog file check confirmed the volume was intact, with modified timestamps aligning with the client's last usage. The entire 10TB of data was recovered over the following two days.

Key lessons from this case: if more than one drive fails in a RAID5, never attempt a Rebuild, Repair, or status change from DEFUNCT to ONLINE — these actions affect recoverability. Always note the error messages and drive numbers that failed. Never remove member drives without marking their order in the array, and never reinsert them in a different order. Install the manufacturer's monitoring utilities so drive health issues are caught early.
